(Question No. 644)

Senator Calvert asked the Minister representing the Minister for Employment, Education and Training, upon notice, on 6 October 1993:

  (1) For how long does the payment of $10,000 to AAP Information Services Pty Ltd cover the distribution of media releases.

  (2) How are the media releases distributed.

  (3) Does this cover the whole of the department or only the NSW component; if only NSW, what are the costs associated with distributing media releases in the other States for the same period.

Senator Robert Ray —The Minister for Employment, Education and Training has provided the following answer to the honourable senator's question:

  (1) The payment of $10,000 to AAP Information Services Pty Ltd covers the distribution of Portfolio media and information releases for a period of twelve months.

  (2) Portfolio media and information releases are distributed electronically via the facsimile facilities of AAP Information Services Pty Ltd.

  (3) The payment of $10,000 to AAP Information Services Pty Ltd covers distribution of media and information releases from the NSW State Office only. For other State and Territory Offices for the same period the costs associated with distributing media and information releases using distribution agencies are:

  Victoria—$1,600; and Queensland—$3,600.

The services of agencies such as AAP Information Services Pty Ltd are not used by DEET State Offices in South Australia, Western Australia, Tasmania and the Northern Territory. These offices issue very few media releases and distribute them directly from the Department.

The majority of the Portfolio's media and information releases are distributed by the Department's Central Office in Canberra. The cost of this for the period in question was $55,000.
