(Question No. 584)

Senator Calvert asked the Minister representing the Minister for Social Security, upon notice, on 13 September 1993:

  (1) For the offices of the Department of Social Security in each State and Territory, what were the training courses, conferences, timeouts and seminars conducted during the 1991-92 and 1992-93 financial years.

  (2) In relation to each item in (1), what was the purpose, the venue and the number of delegates, and what were the accommodation, food and travel costs and the dates.

Senator Richardson —The Minister for Social Security has provided the following answer to the honourable senator's question:

  (1) and (2) The Department does not maintain consolidated records of all training courses, conferences, timeouts and seminars. Many departmental conferences and training courses are held within the Department's own facilities. Records are not readily accessible and the cost to consolidate this information is considered prohibitive. However, records are maintained within the Department's financial processing system where conferences and training courses are held at external venues at a cost.

The lists of conferences and training courses held at external venues for 1992-93 are attached. Details by Area are shown in the attachment for venues, purposes of the conferences and the number of persons attending. The aggregate costs include the cost of the venue hire and any travel and other allowances paid to staff attending.

Information for 1991-92 cannot be readily provided in the same format without use of significant resources as the information is not retained in the Department's financial processing system and would require accessing the paper and microfiche records.
