Senator REYNOLDS —by leave—I thank Senator Newman for her comments. Too often in this place we focus on our differences rather than those areas on which we agree. This issue of community standards relating to the utilisation of new technology is just one area where we do agree. Because of the heavy workload of the Senate, I had not chosen to speak today but I look forward to speaking on a later occasion.

I think Senator Newman will welcome the committee's recommendations. We have timed this report so that it can be taken into account by the federal and state ministers responsible for censorship at their meeting next week. We hope that they will take note of our recommendations in their deliberations. The work of the committee will continue as we monitor the outcome of the censorship ministers' recommendations and the response of the community.

I assure Senator Newman, on behalf of the committee, that we welcome her support and the support of many other honourable senators. We will continue to ensure that regulation of video and computer games is maintained in the best possible form, notwithstanding the difficulties given the nature of the technology.

  Question resolved in the affirmative.
