To the Honourable the President and members of the Senate in parliament assembled. We the undersigned citizens of Australia respectfully submit that:

  The 1993 Federal Budget announcement by the Keating Labor Government to increase wholesale sales tax on wine by more than 50%, from 20% to 31%,

discriminates against the wine industry compared with other beverages;

discriminates against South Australia, which produces 70% of Australia's wine;

threatens the continuing existence of 150 smaller wineries and 500 related jobs;

destroys the capacity for a further $500 million, job-creating investment in the wine industry;

will result in lower grape prices for grapegrowers already burdened by the rural recession;

will severely damage the domestic market base for Australian wine which is so essential to its continuing export growth;

  Your petitioners therefore humbly pray that the Senate will reject the increase in wholesale sales tax on wine.

  And your petitioners, as in duty bound, will ever pray.
