To the Honourable the President and members of the Senate in Parliament assembled the petition of the undersigned respectfully showeth:

  that the Australian Government's current practice of detaining asylum seekers is inhumane and has been the cause of profound psychological damage to detainees;

  that this practice contravenes the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and the Convention on the Rights of the Child; and

  that detention has in particular cases been found to be illegal.

  Your petitioners therefore request that the Senate assembled should request the Government:

  to end immediately the practice of long term detention of asylum seekers, and

  to recognise that those who have suffered prolonged detention should be able to claim resident status on humanitarian grounds.

  And your petitioners, as in duty bound, will ever pray.
