Senator TIERNEY —I give notice that, on the next day of sitting, I shall move:

  That the Senate—

  (a)condemns the Australian Labor Party (ALP) and the Keating Government for the 55 per cent increase in wine sales tax;

    (i)that the Winemakers Federation has rejected Government suggestions for easing the impact of the tax increase saying that there are no offsets that could possibly compensate for the damage done by the tax increase, and

    (ii)with dismay, the fact that this tax increase will result in $445 million of lost investment in the wine and grape growing industry;

  (c)questions the integrity of the Treasurer (Mr Dawkins) who claimed the 1993-94 Budget was about job creation when this low investment will clearly result in job losses;

  (d)notes that the Hunter Valley is already suffering unemployment of 11.5 per cent and this action by the ALP will only increase the severity of the recession; and

  (e)calls on the Member for Hunter (Mr Fitzgibbon) and the Member for Paterson (Mr Horne) in the House of Representatives to stand up for their constituents and oppose the increased wine sales tax by crossing the floor and voting out this iniquitous tax.
