(Question No. 355)


Senator Alston asked the Minister representing the Minister for Communications, upon notice, on 9 June 1993:

  (1) By State or territory, how many residential properties does the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) currently own and what is their total estimated value.

  (2) For each residential property sold by the ABC in the past two years in Darwin: (a) what was the address of the property; (b) was an independent valuation of the property sought by the ABC prior to the sale; if not, why not; if so, what was the valuation; (c) what amount was received by the ABC for its sale; (d) was the buyer an employee of the ABC; if so, was the sale on a restricted basis

in that it was offered only to ABC employees; and (e) on what basis otherwise was the sale made, public tender, public auction, through a private real estate agent, or any other and what means.


Senator Collins —The Minister for Communications has provided the following answer to the honourable senator's question, based on information provided by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation:

  (1) Details of residential properties owned by the ABC are as follows:

  QLD—2

  NSW—1

  NT—4

  SA—1

  WA—7

  The total current market value is $1,433,000.

  (2) (a) See attached schedule.

  (b) Yes, see attached schedule.

  (c) See attached schedule.

  (d) and (e) The properties were sold on the following basis:

  (i) Initially offered to existing ABC tenants and transferred officers at that location, for 85% of valuation, (consistent with practice of other Government agencies).

  (ii) If no takers under (i) offered to other ABC staff at location for 100% of valuation.

  (iii) If no takers under (i) or (ii), sold by public auction.

Details of the basis for each sale is shown on the attached schedule.
