Senator GARETH EVANS (Leader of the Government in the Senate) —I rise in response to the resolution of the Senate dated 19 August on the motion of Senator Tambling regarding a proposed fundraising scheme of the ALP to provide access to ministers, which was cancelled by the national secretary of the party several days before the event was to take place. I table now the requested responses dealing with this matter from all ministers or ministers' offices as the case may be. On my own behalf, I state that neither I nor any member of my staff had any knowledge of this scheme before it became public.

The responses from ministers or the ministers' offices that I am now tabling will demonstrate—when Senator Tambling has had a chance to have a look at them—that this has been yet another time consuming, time wasting fishing expedition which has precisely the catch it deserved, namely, nothing. With the precise legislative record for two sitting weeks being one half of one particular bill, let me express the hope once again, as articulated by Senator McMullan earlier on today, that we will regard ourselves as having exhausted for the moment these kinds of exercises and get on with the proper business of this place; namely, the legislative program. I table the responses.
