Senator Alston asked the Minister representing the Minister for Communications, upon notice, on 9 June 1993:

  (1) What is the total annual cost of putting to air the national news of the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC), how is it calculated and what is the breakdown.

  (2) What was the total amount of overtime paid per equivalent full-time staff member by the ABC in each and which of its divisions or operations for 1991-92 and what are the estimates for 1992-93.


Senator Collins —The Minister for Communications has provided the following answer to the honourable senator's question, based on information provided by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation:

TELEVISION

  (1) The costs of ABC Television News for 1992/93 are as follows:

Salaries and Indirects 12,507,100

Labour 13,358,948

LISOB 4,253,169

30,119,217

LEGEND:

  Salaries and Indirects:

Salaries—represents salary costs for journalists, support staff and management, in ABC terms is referred to as departmental labour.

Indirects—represents cost not directly attributable to a program eg: telephones and stationery.

  Labour:

Represents cost for producers, producers assistants, graphic design, make-up, studio crews, field crew, editors etc. Staff performing these duties are not directly employed by the News/CAFF department, they are employed by the branch supplying the service. In ABC terms this is referred to as resource labour.

  LISOB:

These are direct costs associated with the production of a program eg: satellite communications and artist fees.

  (2) In conjunction with (1) this question has been taken to mean overtime paid for TV News Staff.

  In ABC Television the total amount of overtime paid per equivalent full-time staff member in 1991/92 was $1,923 and in 1992/93, $1,907.

RADIO

  (1) The direct costs of ABC Radio News for 1992/93 are as follows:

  Australia-wide Newsrooms servicing five networks—$19.4m.

  Overseas Bureaux—$4.4m.

  Production Operations—$1.8m.

  (2) In conjunction with (1) this question has been taken to mean overtime paid for Radio News Staff.

  In ABC Radio News the total amount of overtime paid per equivalent full-time staff member in 1991/92 was $1,180, and in 1992/93, $906.
