Senator COLLINS —Yesterday Senator Boswell asked me a question regarding the position of Ms Pamela Bornhorst, a 7.30 Report presenter from the ABC, and I advised Senator Boswell that I would seek further information as to whether the minister for communications had been advised about this proposed action. He was not advised, as I was not advised. Indeed, it was not appropriate or necessary for the minister to be advised. The ABC, as I said yesterday, is an independent statutory body. The government has no authority to intervene in its staffing matters and for the government to do so could effectively compromise the editorial position of the broadcaster.

The most important information which I provide—and it is particularly important in respect of a notice of motion in the name of Senator Parer—is that the matter of Ms Bornhorst's position is currently before the Industrial Relations Commission, and no doubt there will be a resolution to that issue in the commission.
