(Question No. 466)

Senator Alston asked the Minister representing the Special Minister of State, upon notice, on 27 July 1993:

  (1) Has the Minister or his predecessors carried out the recommendation of the House of Representatives Select Committee on the Print Media, March 1992, which called on him to convene a meeting of representatives of publishers and what was formerly

known as the Australian Journalists Association at the earliest opportunity, to discuss the implementation of restructuring of the Australian Press Council; if so: (a) when did any such meetings take place; (b) who attended the meetings and on behalf of which organisations; and (c) what was the outcome of those meetings; if not, why not.

  (2) Will any action be taken on this matter; if so, when and what action will be taken.

Senator Gareth Evans —The Special Minister of State has provided the following answer to the honourable senator's question:

  (1) and (2) The Leader of the House informed the House of Representatives on 17 December 1992 that the Government's response to the Report of the House of Representatives Select Committee on the Print Media would be tabled in March 1993. Because a Federal election was called before this date, the tabling of the Government's response was held up. The Government's response to the Report, including this recommendation, will be tabled in the Budget Sittings 1993.
