(Question No. 292)

Senator Coulter asked the Minister representing the Minister for the Environment, Sport and Territories, upon notice, on 25 May 1993:

  (1) Is it correct that the Minister supports Sydney's bid to host the 2000 Olympic Games.

  (2) Is Sydney's bid predicated on the closure of Newington Armament Depot and its relocation to Jervis Bay; if so, is the closure necessary to accommodate the requirements of the Sydney Olympic bid.

  (3) Is the establishment of an armament depot at Jervis Bay incompatible with proposals to extend Jervis Bay National Park.

  (4) Is it correct that the Minister supports the proposals to extend Jervis Bay National Park.

  (5) How does the Minister intend to reconcile this apparent conflict between her differing portfolio responsibilities.

Senator Schacht —The Minister for the Environment, Sport and Territories has provided the following answer to the honourable senator's question:

  (1) Yes.

  (2) The relocation of the Newington Armaments Depot is important to Sydney's Olympic bid as some of the land currently occupied by the depot is scheduled to be used for the Olympic Village. As a result, planning for the closure is based on a timetable assuming Sydney will be successful. However, the intention is to vacate the Depot and close the supply line even if Sydney's Olympic bid is unsuccessful. The bid is in no way predicated on any particular site for a relocated depot.

  (4) Yes.

  (3) & (5) Four sites are under examination and a final decision on the new site for the Depot is yet to be made. In the selection of a site for the armaments depot normal government processes will be followed. For example, any proposal to relocate the Depot to a particular site would be subject to environmental assessment under the Environment Protection (Impact of Proposals) Act 1974.
