(Question No. 65)

Senator Short asked the Minister representing the Treasurer, upon notice, on 5 May 1993:

With reference to the inclusion of an item in the purchase and disposals gazette on page 2086 relating to the Tax Office external venues, please provide details of the expenditure of $9 million over 3 years to the Southern Pacific Hotel Corporation.

Senator McMullan —The Treasurer has provided the following answer to the honourable senator's question:

The gazette notice referred to a standing offer contract which has been let by competitive tender to the Southern Pacific Hotels Corporation for the provision of external venues over a three-year period from 14 July 1992. The stated value of the contract is a high estimate for gazettal purposes, was based on previous years' expenditures (which are declining) and does not represent the amount which the ATO may actually pay to the company during the life of the contract.

The contract allows the ATO to obtain external venues at competitive prices which are fixed in 12 month rests. By having a standing offer contract the ATO is able to encourage full use of available internal facilities before moving conferences and meetings to external venues.

The total expenditure against the contract for the period from 14 July 1992 to 24 March 1993 was $721,972.
