Senator PATTERSON —I give notice that, on the next day of sitting, I shall move:

  That the Senate—

    (a)acknowledges that the Japanese Prime Minister (Mr Morihiro Hosokawa) has apologised and expressed his deepest condolences to the victims of the Second World War;

    (b)notes that:

    (i)these victims include `comfort' women who were principally from China and Korea and who were abducted and forced to work in military brothels, and

    (ii)Mr Hosokawa is reportedly considering establishing a $14 billion fund to compensate victims of Japanese war crimes; and

    (c)calls on the Federal Government to do all it can to encourage the Japanese Government to pursue this course of action.
