Senator Patterson asked the Minister for Veterans' Affairs, upon notice, on 19 May 1993:

  With reference to the Federal Labor Caucus motion of 21 August 1988 requiring women to be appointed to at least 25 per cent of places on Government boards, councils and committees, for each of the boards, councils and committees to which the Minister has the power to appoint members, and for all of these combined:

  (1) How many positions were available for appointment on 21 August 1988 and are now available.

  (2) How many of these positions were held by women on 21 August 1988 and are now available.

  (3) What change do the resulting proportions represent since the Labor Caucus motion.


Senator Faulkner —The answer to the honourable senator's question is as follows:

  Each of the boards, councils and committees to which the Minister has the power to appoint members are listed below:

THE NATIONAL ADVISORY COMMITTEE ON VIETNAM VETERANS' COUNSELLING SERVICE

  (1) On 21 August 1988 there were 5 positions and, at present, there are 5 positions.

  (2) On 21 August 1988 no members were women and, at present, no members are women.

  (3) There has been no change since the Labor Caucus motion.

THE REPATRIATION PHARMACEUTICAL REFERENCE COMMITTEE

  (1) On 21 August 1988 there were 12 positions and, at present, there are 12 positions.

  (2) On 21 August 1988 no members were women and, at present, no members are women. (One position was held by a woman between January 1989 and April 1992.)

  (3) Apart from the above comment there has been no change since the Labor Caucus motion.

For all of these combined :

  (1) On 21 August 1988 there were 17 members and, at present, there are 17 members.

  (2) On 21 August 1988 no members were women and, at present, no members are women. (One position was held by a woman between January 1989 and April 1992.)

  (3) Apart from the above comment there has been no change since the Labor Caucus motion.
