Senator Campbell asked the Minister for Transport and Communications, upon notice, on 13 May 1993:

  (1) How many square metres of office space are either leased, owned or occupied by the Department and agencies.

  (2) What is the break-down by State and territories.

  (3) How many Department and agency employees occupy the office space.

  (4) What is the break-down by State and territories.


Senator Collins —The answer to the honourable senator's question is as follows:

  Considerable effort would be required to compile the information sought for all portfolio agencies. The following information relates to the area paid for by the Department during 1992-93.

  (1) The Department of Transport and Communications has control of 43,094 square metres of office space Australia wide. This figure includes special purpose accommodation such as District Radio Inspector's premises.

  (2) The break-up of office space by State and Territory is:

  New South Wales—2434 sq m

  Victoria—2223 sq m

  Queensland—2941 sq m

  South Australia—1306 sq m

  Western Australia—1914 sq m

  Tasmania—587 sq m

  ACT—31508 sq m

  Northern Territory—179 sq m

  (3) The Department had, as at February 1993, 1741 personnel occupying these premises.

  (4) The break-up of employees by State and Territory is:

  New South Wales—86

  Victoria—77

  Queensland—88

  South Australia—41

  Western Australia—74

  Tasmania—26

  ACT—1303

  Northern Territory—5
