Senator Campbell asked the Minister for Defence, upon notice, on 13 May 1993:

  (l) How many square metres of office space are either leased, owned or occupied by the department and agencies.

  (2) What is the break-down by State and territories.

  (3) How many department and agency employees occupy the office space.

  (4) What is the break-down by State and territories.

Senator Robert Ray —The answer to the honourable senator's question is as follows:

  The Department of Defence has interpreted office space as applying to administrative type offices only and has provided an estimate for the total administrative office space occupied, whether leased, owned or occupied on some other permissive basis. In this context, the response does not include facilities such as Defence bases, training establishments, laboratories, colleges, warehousing complexes or operational commands.

  (1) 306,924 total square metres.

  (2) NSW—36,156; QLD—11,682; VIC—106,126; SA—4,591; WA—11,785; TAS—3,871; NT—1,089; ACT—131,624.

  (3) 13,821 personnel.
