(Question No. 121)

Senator Newman asked the Minister representing the Minister for Industrial Relations, upon notice, on 12 May 1993:

  (1) Has the Minister received a report from the department on the recognition of prior service with the Australian Defence Force as a continuous service with the Commonwealth when redundancy payments are being calculated for Commonwealth employees.

  (2) Has the Minister's attention been drawn to the Ombudsman's report on the same issue.

  (3) If there is any difference of substance in the findings or recommendations in the two reports, will further consultations be undertaken with ex-service organisations before reaching any decisions.

Senator McMullan —The Minister for Industrial Relations has provided the following answer to the honourable senator's question:

  (1) I have received the report from my Department and am considering it.

  (2) Yes.

  (3) Extensive consultations have already taken place, and are covered in the report. This, together with the Ombudsman's views, should provide sufficient information for me to make an appropriate judgement on the matters raised.
