(Question No. 286)

Senator Calvert asked the President of the Senate, upon notice, on 25 May 1993:

  (1) What was the total cost, including design, fitting, materials and labour, of the new brass handrails which have been installed at the base of the two marble stairs in the Parliament House entrance foyer.

  (2) Was the work put out to tender; if not, why not.

  (3) Which company or individual undertook the task of installation.

  (4) How many individuals have reported falling down the two sets of marble steps in the Parliament House foyer.

  (5) What has been the extent of any injuries received in (4).

  (6) How much has the Commonwealth been requested to pay in compensation claims relating to (4).

The PRESIDENT —I provide the following information in answer to the above questions:

  (1) $21 298.

  (2) Yes.

  (3) Border Stainless Steel Pty Ltd, Queanbeyan NSW.

  (4) 61.

  (5) Fractures, grazes, sprains and bruises.
