Senator SHERRY (Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Primary Industries and Energy) (11.41 a.m.) —I should make it perfectly clear that although the Government has agreed to facilitate this motion, we do not necessarily subscribe to the principle that members of non-government parties should be Chairs of select committees. I make that comment so that our position is perfectly clear, and I should say that it is no reflection on Senator Watson whatsoever. I have had the opportunity to serve as Chair of this committee and will do so for another four or five weeks. I can say that during that time, Senator Watson, as a member of the committee and obviously in terms of his contribution in this chamber, has always been recognised by the Government as a very knowledgeable and diligent senator. I will be making comments at a later date about the role of the committee, its functions and the staff.

  Question resolved in the affirmative.
