Senator CROWLEY (Minister for Family Services and Minister Assisting the Prime Minister for the Status of Women) —(6.15 p.m.)—I quite object to and differ with Senator Patterson's suggestion that I or the Government have misled people. It is very clear—

Senator Patterson —The public will make up their minds.

Senator CROWLEY —I do not wish to claim that how Senator Patterson understands things is how I understand them, but the people of Australia have their own view. They have made it quite clear that they were prepared to welcome this contribution at Christmas for people in need. That is really all that needs to be said about it.

Senator Patterson —I asked Senator Crowley: did she tell the people at the launch of the St Vincent de Paul winter appeal that the Government matched, dollar for dollar, the money raised by these charities during the Christmas appeal?

Senator CROWLEY —It is an interesting thing that Senator Patterson should ask. I was actually at a celebration where people very much involved in assisting this Government to provide care and relief for people were only too pleased to have the Government there launching the winter appeal. What I might do is refer to my notes, in as much as I have notes of what I have said, and see whether I did say exactly that.
