Senator COULTER —I ask that general business notice of motion No. 17 standing in my name be taken as formal. This concerns the restitution of the Australian Loan Council Committee. I believe the Opposition now has no wish to proceed with its proposed amendment.

The PRESIDENT —Is leave granted?

Senator Hill —I am satisfied that the previous order setting up the Select Committee on the Functions, Powers and Operation of the Australian Loan Council adequately encompasses the principle that we are seeking to insert into orders setting up other select committees, that is, basically that the majority in this place determines the chairman. The order concerning the membership of the loan council committee was structured in such a way that three senators came from the Government, three from the Opposition and one from the Australian Democrats. That is in a form that meets our requirements; therefore, I do not think the amendment that we were proposing earlier is necessary.

  Leave granted.

Senator COULTER —I move:

(1)That the select committee known as the Select Committee on the Functions, Powers and Operation of the Australian Loan Council, appointed by resolutions of the Senate of 3 and 9 November 1992, be re-appointed with the same functions and powers, except as otherwise provided in this resolution.

(2)That the committee have power to consider and use for its purposes the minutes of evidence and records of the Select Committee on the Functions, Powers and Operation of the Australian Loan Council appointed in the previous Parliament.

(3)That the committee report to the Senate on or before the first sitting day in September 1993.

  Question resolved in the affirmative.
