Senator BUTTON —Earlier today at Question Time, Senator Short endeavoured to raise a spectre about a services tax. He asked me to deny that any work was being done on one. I indicated that the Government had given no consideration to this matter. He asked me to deny that work is being done by the Treasury or the Australian Tax Office. I can now provide a categorical assurance, on advice from the Treasurer's office, that no work is being done by the Treasury nor the ATO on this issue.

Senator Alston —Was it in the Treasurer's office?

Senator BUTTON —It does not matter where. I am giving the Senate a categorical denial.
