Senator LEES (Deputy Leader of the Australian Democrats) (7.55 p.m.) —by leave—I move:

1.Clause 77, page 54, line 12, omit "30", substitute "50".

2.Clause 78, page 54, proposed paragraph 524A, paragraph (2)(a), line 27, omit "30", substitute "50".

Amendments Nos. 1 and 2 relate to voluntary work. We argue that while the Government increase is welcome, it is nowhere near sufficient and we wish to increase the number of days to 50. Voluntary work is not about filling in people's time; it is about keeping in touch with the community, maintaining social contact, honing one's skills and keeping them relevant as well as what is actually achieved personally and, indeed, for the community. I must note here that it is not actually included as part of GDP, but there is an enormous amount of work done in our community by the volunteers. I commend these amendments to the Senate.
