Senator TEAGUE —I address my question to the Minister representing the Minister for Aboriginal Affairs. If he is unable to answer my questions now, I ask that he refer them directly to the Minister. Firstly, does the Minister for Aboriginal Affairs categorically deny that in the month preceding 13 October 1988 he had a conversation with Mr Perkins about Mr Perkins's knowledge of the ADC commissioners' intention to make decisions affecting Mrs McPherson and Mr O'Brien? Secondly, does the Minister for Aboriginal Affairs categorically deny that his private secretary had such a conversation with Mr Perkins in that one-month period? Thirdly, and finally, does the Minister for Aboriginal Affairs categorically deny that in the week including 2 October he or his private secretary spoke with Mr Perkins by telephone from South Australia to the Northern Territory?

Senator TATE —This series of questions arises out of an article in today's Australian which purports to deal with revelations by Mr Perkins. The Minister in the other place has made it clear during Question Time that he rejects and rebuts utterly the claims made by Mr Perkins in the article and characterises them as false. I have no reason to think that the Minister would in any way move away from the answer that I gave on 14 October, when I confirmed that the Minister for Aboriginal Affairs did not have prior knowledge of any action taken by the ADC commissioners at their meeting that week. Nevertheless, I will refer the full list of questions to Mr Hand, but I do not anticipate that there will be a requirement to supplement the answer I have just given.
