Senator JENKINS —I give notice that, on the next day of sitting, I shall move:

That the Senate-

(a) notes that in May 1989, the Environmental Protection Authority of Western Australia (EPA) released a technical report entitled The Environmental Condition of the Vasse-Wonnerup Wetland System and a Discussion of Management Options;

(b) commends the EPA for producing this bulletin and supports the recommendation of the Western Australian Department of Conservation and Land Management that the Vasse-Wonnerup wetlands be nominated for inclusion on the Ramsar Convention list of wetlands of international importance;

(c) deplores the failure of the Western Australian Government to provide adequate conservation protection for this important wetland complex, especially since up to 96 percent of the adjacent freshwater wetlands have been lost, as stated on page 13 of the report;

(d) expresses concern that the Vasse-Wonnerup wetlands continue to be threatened by development of the fringing land and by pollution from nutrients leached from the surrounding catchment; and

(e) requests the Australian Government to remind more vigorously the Government of Western Australia of international obligations under the Ramsar Treaty, with a view to expediting the nomination of wetlands such as the Vasse-Wonnerup complex for inclusion on the Ramsar Convention List of Wetlands of International Importance.
