Senator WALTERS —by leave-I give notice that, on the next day of sitting, I shall move:

That the Senate, noting-

(a) the recent actions of the Government, in purporting to remove unilaterally from the Remuneration Tribunal its responsibility to determine the annual limit of postage entitlement to Members of the House of Representatives by retrospectively increasing and indexing the entitlement of MHRs to $30,525, and indexing Senators' $9000 entitlement;

(b) the serious concerns of the Opposition about the legality of the Government's action, particularly as it relates to the purported withdrawal of jurisdiction from the Remuneration Tribunal that is the subject of a current determination; and

(c) the action of the Opposition in seeking an independent legal opinion on the legality of the Government action;

calls on the Government to withhold payment of any stamp allowance over and above that determined by the Remuneration Tribunal until the legal doubts about this Government action have been settled.

Sitting suspended from 1 to 2 p.m.
