(Question No. 1105)


Senator Tambling asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade, upon notice, on 4 August 1989:

(1) Does the Minister recall that, in March 1988, in his then capacity as Minister for Resources and Energy, he undertook, on behalf of the Government, to review the operation of the arrangements for exploration and mining on Northern Territory Aboriginal land 2 years after amendments to the `Aboriginal Land Rights (Northern Territory) Act 1976' were put into effect.

(2) Is the Minister aware that his colleague, the Minister for Aboriginal Affairs, has now dishonoured the undertaking he then made.

(3) Will the Minister take urgent steps to ensure that the Government does honour the commitment he made on its behalf.

(1) Yes.

(2) No.

(3) This is a matter falling within the responsibilities of my colleague, the Minister for Aboriginal Affairs.
