(Question No. 1022)

Senator Newman asked the Minister representing the Minister for Veterans' Affairs, upon notice, on 29 May 1989:

What were the office manning figures for the Head Office of the Department of Veterans' Affairs in: (a) 1978; and (b) 1988.

Senator Reynolds —The Minister for Veterans' Affairs has provided the following answer to the honourable senator's question:

The information sought is held only by financial years. For the financial years ended (a) 30 June 1978 and (b) 30 June 1988 respectively, 378 and 571.41 full-time equivalent staff were employed in Canberra in the Central Office of the Department of Veterans' Affairs under the Public Service Act.

The majority of this growth occurred between 1982 and 1985 when the staff numbers increased from 389 to 664. Some of the more significant causes of the increase were-

the introduction of a new Repatriation determining system;

the establishment of the Vietnam Veterans Counselling Service;

the establishment of a new Systems Division.
