To the Honourable President and members of the Senate in Parliament. The petition of the undersigned shows:

From June to September 1989 Australia will host the Kangaroo '89 joint military exercises involving 28,000 Australian and United States troops from the air, navy, and land forces;

The exercise coincides with a massive increase in Australian military expenditure on frigates, submarines, helicopters, and joint military exercises;

Your Government's own defence paper states that Australia is without direct threat of invasion;

The Australian and New Zealand Governments are prepared to intervene militarily in the Asia Pacific region;

And believing that the Kangaroo '89 exercises are designed to stimulate fear of invasion in the public;

Encourage acceptance of increasing Australian militarisation and continued dependence of the US alliance;

Your petitioners request that the Senate, in parliament assembled, should cancel the Kangaroo '89 joint military exercise;

Allocate the $230 million due to be spent on the exercise to public health, housing, education, and other urgently needed social and welfare projects.

And your petitioners, as in duty bound, will ever pray.
