Senator SCHACHT —I give notice that, on the next day of sitting, I shall move:

That the Senate-

(a) welcomes the news that Lech Walesa could be the next Prime Minister of Poland;

(b) notes that this outcome would clearly be welcomed by the overwhelming majority of Polish people as indicated in the Polish elections which took place in June 1989;

(c) welcomes the previous statements by the President of the Soviet Union (Mr Gorbachev) that countries of Eastern Europe have the right to determine their own internal affairs without interference; and

(d) calls upon the Soviet Union and other Warsaw Pact countries not to interfere in any way with the right of the Polish people to determine the composition of their government.
