To the Honourable the President and members of the Senate in Parliament assembled: The petition of the undersigned citizens of Australia respectfully showeth:

1. That we consider the current level of interest rates on home mortgages to be intolerable;

2. That we believe that Senator Haines' Income Tax Assessment (Housing Loan Interest) Amendment Bill 1989, which provides for tax relief for mortgage payers and is currently before the Senate, provides reasonable relief to the current unacceptable situation;

3. That the Senate assembled should, therefore, urgently debate and pass Senator Haines' Bill;

And your petitioners, as in duty bound, will ever pray.
