(Question No. 917)

Senator Tambling asked the Minister representing the Minister for Aboriginal Affairs, upon notice, on 4 April 1989:

(1) Will the Minister obtain and table in the Senate the documents dated 23 January and 3 February 1989 to which he referred in replying to a question about threatened suspension of Commonwealth funding to Hopevale Aboriginal Community.

(2) Has the Minister for Aboriginal Affairs given any consideration not to proceed with funding for the Hopevale Community for a reason other than a political point of view held by an individual.

Senator Tate —The Minister for Aboriginal Affairs has provided the following answer to the honourable senator's question:

(1) and (2) In respect of the second part of the honourable senator's question, the Government has allocated $6 million to the Hopevale Aboriginal community under the 2 year Priority Communities Development Strategy; $3.8 million in 1988/89 and $2.2 million in 1989/90. Works undertaken under the strategy include roadworks, house construction and the provision of water and sewerage facilities. Consideration was not given at any stage to withdraw, defer, or decrease funding to the Hopevale Community as the Government recognises the need in this area and has always considered the funding to be essential.

Turning to the first part of the honourable senator's question, in view of the details above, I do not intend to table the documents of 23 January and 3 February 1989 as they are respectively:

a standard minute from the Minister for Aboriginal Affairs to his Departmental Secretary approving the Hopevale funding arrangements detailed above; and

a letter of offer from the Department of Aboriginal Affairs to the Hopevale Aboriginal Community explaining the 1988/89 and 1989/90 funding arrangements.
