Senator MACKLIN —I give notice that, on the next day of sitting, I shall move:

That the Senate-

(a) notes the recent Australian National University survey which found that 3 out of 4 Australians approve of overseas aid;

(b) condemns the Government's Budget decision to slash the total overseas aid budget by nearly $36 million;

(c) is appalled that the Government has allowed overseas aid to plummet to a meagre 0.33 per cent of Gross National Product in 1989-90, which is the lowest level for more than 30 years; and

(d) notes that this sharp reduction contradicts the recommendation of the Joint Committee on Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade made just 4 months ago that foreign aid should constitute 0.5 per cent of Gross National Product by 1992.
