Senator Teague asked the Minister for the Arts, Sport, the Environment, Tourism and Territories, upon notice, on 14 June 1989:

(1) Does the Commonwealth use `Champion' brand paper, for example, is `Champion' brand paper obtained through wholesalers or retailers in South Australia; if so, how much does the Commonwealth use per annum in (a) reams and (b) dollars.

(2) How much of this paper does the Commonwealth have on order.

(3) From what company is the paper purchased.

(4) Is this paper imported; if so, from what country and in which region of that country is the wood pulp for the paper grown.


Senator Robert Ray —The Minister for the Arts, Sport, the Environment, Tourism and Territories transferred this question to the Minister for Administrative Services, who has provided the following answer to the honourable senator's question:

(1) The Department of Administrative Services has no record or knowledge of any Commonwealth contract that specifies the use of `Champion' brand paper.

(2) See (1).

(3) The paper is available through Spicers Paper Limited, 89-90 Belmore Road, Riverwood NSW 2210. There may also be other sources.

(4) `Champion' brand paper is manufactured in the United States of America. It is not known in which region of that country the wood pulp for the paper is grown.
