Senator Messner asked the Minister representing the Minister for Administrative Services, upon notice, on 13 June 1989:

(1) How many professional engineer positions in the Department of Administrative Services were vacant at 30 April 1989 at each classification level.

(2) How many contract professional engineers were engaged in the Department of Administrative Services as at 30 April 1989.

(3) What are the reasons stated by the Department of Administrative Services for its difficulty in recruiting professional engineers.

(4) What is the number of positions in the Department of Administrative Services for which mandatory professional engineering qualifications have been removed since 1980.


Senator Robert Ray —The Minister for Administrative Services has provided the following answer to the honourable senator's question:

117 x Engineer Class 1

51 x Engineer Class 2

37 x Engineer Class 3

24 x Engineer Class 4

1 x Engineer Class 5

(2) Thirty-six (36) contract professional engineers were engaged in the Department as at 30 April 1989.

(3) The remuneration and fringe benefits offered by the Commonwealth are generally at a lower level than those obtainable in the private sector.

(4) The Department of Administrative Services has removed mandatory professional engineering qualifications from two Engineer positions.
