Senator COOK (Minister for Resources)(2.11) —Senator Puplick has provided a lucid exposition of what is involved here. I do not intend to go back over that but I intend to acknowledge with thanks his comment about the extension of the terms of reference of the Senate select committee. We would like to include public and private hospitals because we believe they are the major contributors to the health insurance costs. That is a matter for some further discussion.

I am also advised that in terms of what Senator Coulter has said the Minister for Community Services and Health (Dr Blewett) has said that he will consider the recommendations of the Senate select committee in the context of Medicare generally. I do not wish to add any more to the debate other than to say--

Honourable senators interjecting-

Senator COOK —I cannot resist this comment. Senator Coulter talked about a deal. I do not think Senator Coulter should raise that issue in this chamber because everyone at different times has been party to a deal.

Question resolved in the affirmative.

Resolution reported; report adopted.
