Senator JENKINS —I give notice that, on the next day of sitting, I shall move:

That the Senate-

(a) recalls the answer given to the Senate by the Minister for Immigration, Local Government and Ethnic Affairs (Senator Ray) on 5 June 1989, when Senator Jenkins asked what guarantee existed that the deported Swedish resident, Mr Sergio Buschmann, would not be detained in transit for the purpose of his return to Chile, and the Minister's reply in part: `As he is a refugee, I would always seek that, when he leaves the country, by which route he leaves the country and the secrecy of that be handled in such a way as not to make him vulnerable to any other activity against him so that he can have safe passage through to Sweden . . . We have no intention of placing Mr Buschmann in a situation where his life may be endangered, or he cannot travel back to Sweden, where he has refugee status.';

(b) notes that Mr Buschmann has been intercepted at Anchorage and detained by agents of the United States of America amid speculation that he may be returned to Chile in exchange for people wanted by the United States;

(c) endorses and supports the view of the Swedish Government that Mr Buschmann is a resident of that country and should be given safe conduct to Sweden as guaranteed by Australia; and

(d) exhorts the Government therefore to make the strongest possible representations to the United States with a view to securing the immediate return of Mr Buschmann to Sweden.
