Senator BISHOP(7.28) —The Opposition will not be supporting the Australian Democrats' amendments, but we do acknowledge that there are difficulties with regard to the unemployment benefit, and this problem is currently part of our reviewing process. We do not believe that ad hoc amendments such as those suggested by the Democrats would substantially improve the situation. I make these remarks consistent with the remarks I have made earlier that these matters are serious and need to be addressed in our Party room. The amendments would entail greater expenditure. As I said, this matter has to be considered in the totality of the way in which this problem is addressed, and not just as an ad hoc solution.
