Senator JONES(10.55) —I will not hold up the Senate for long. I rise to extend my sympathy, and that of other senators, to the family of Michael Anderson-his mother, father, brother and two sisters-on the sudden loss of their son. Michael was tragically killed in an accident in Canberra. I do not wish to comment on the circumstances of the accident because charges may be laid and other investigations may take place. Michael was 26 years of age, single and had worked in the Senate as an attendant for only six weeks. Everyone to whom I have spoken, including the officers he served, has said that, during the period he worked here, Michael was outstanding in the way that he carried out his duties. He will surely be missed by the people he served during that short period of six weeks. Michael had previously spent three years in the Royal Australian Navy, had been a member of the Army Reserve and had won an award for the best recruit in 1987. I feel sure that I speak for all senators when I express to his family our deepest sympathy in the loss of their son Michael.
