Senator VALLENTINE —I give notice that, on the next day of sitting, I shall move:

That the Senate-

(a) applauds the decision by a majority of voters in the Sacramento, California, to close down the Rancho Seco nuclear power plant the first operating power plant to be shut down by public pressure;

(b) notes the decision in West Germany not to continue with construction of the Wackersdorf nuclear fuel reprocessing facility in eastern Bavaria and instead to convert it to produce solar energy cells;

(c) commends both these decisions as they reflect a growing understanding of the perils of nuclear power and a preference for the safe energy path of conservation, energy efficiency and development of renewable resources; and

(d) calls on the Australian Government to note both these decisions overseas along with the overwhelming number of similar submissions made to the ALP Uranium Review Committee, and to therefore phase-out uranium mining altogether in Australia and proceed down the safe energy path instead.
