Senator CALVERT —I give notice that, on the next day of sitting, I shall move:

That the Senate-

(a) notes that recently-released figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics show that only 42 per cent of Australia's wage and salary earners in August 1988 were trade union members;

(b) further notes that, with the exception of the mining industry and those in part-time employment, the proportion of employees who are trade union members has fallen in all States;

(c) recognises that this significant decline in trade union membership reflects the growing disenchantment of the ordinary Australian worker with the Hawke Labor Government, a Government which has presided over a $160 a month increase in mortgage rates, a 7 per cent inflation rate despite amended collection methods and a drastic drop in living standards; and

(d) acknowledges that this desertion of the Government by its traditional heartland is further indication of the limited life expectancy of the present Government.
