Motion (by Senator Macklin) agreed to:

That the Senate-

(a) is appalled at the killing by machine guns, tanks and helicopters of thousands of Chinese demonstrating in support of democratic reforms;

(b) notes the statement by the Prime Minister (Mr Hawke) that violent repression by the authorities, which has resulted in the death of these people who were peacefully exercising their democratic rights, cannot be accepted;

(c) profoundly deplores the killings; and

(d) supports the Australian Government in conveying similar sentiments to the Government of the People's Republic of China.
