(Question No. 937)

Senator Macklin asked the Minister representing the Treasurer, upon notice, on 10 April 1989:

Following the media statement by Mr E. J. Lindsay, MP on 1 November 1988 relating to superannuation, will the Minister give an undertaking that Commonwealth Superannuation pension levels, particularly Defence Force pension levels, will be restored in the 1989-90 budget to compensate in full for the 2 per cent discounting of the 1986 indexation for such pensions; if not, why not.

Senator Walsh —The Treasurer has provided the following answer to the honourable senator's question:

In the April 1989 Economic Statement, the Government announced that the pension base for both the Commonwealth Superannuation and Defence Force Retirement and Death Benefits Schemes would be restored, in November 1989, to what it would have been had the 2 per cent discount of the 1986 indexation increase not been applied.
