Senator Macklin asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade, upon notice, on 10 May 1989:

(1) Does the Government agree with recommendation 40 of the Joint Committee on Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade in its report Australia's Relations with the South Pacific that: `The Australian Government to appoint a junior Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade with the responsibility for Australia's relations with the South Pacific'; if so, what action has been undertaken with respect to this recommendation; if not, why not.

(2) Does the Government agree with recommendation 41 of the Joint Committee on Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade in its report Australia's Relations with the South Pacific that: `Australia to establish a small consulate in French Polynesia'; if so, what action has been undertaken with respect to this recommendation; if not, why not.


Senator Gareth Evans —The answer to the honourable senator's question is as follows:

The Government is now considering most carefully the interesting and useful report on Australia's Relations with the South Pacific which was recently presented by the Joint Committee on Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade and will respond to all the recommendations made in the report when its consideration is complete.
