Senator GARETH EVANS —Yesterday, Senator Tambling asked me a question about Darwin Airport. I have a further response on that. I seek leave to incorporate the answer in Hansard.

Leave granted.

The answer read as follows-

The Minister for Telecommunications and Aviation Support has supplied the following answer:

Second-hand reports have been received of comments attributed to Mr Graham McMahon, General Manager Ansett, on the lines that Ansett may consider developing its own Darwin terminal.

The Federal Airports Corporation has been consulting closely with both Ansett and Australian Airlines on facilities and lease conditions in the new Darwin terminal. The issue of separate terminal developments by Ansett has not arisen in those discussions.

I understand that negotiations are still proceeding between the Corporation and airlines on aspects of the proposed Darwin development. I have no doubt that if Ansett seriously proposed to build its own terminal, it would discuss the proposal with the Corporation.
