(Question No. 975)

Senator Colston asked the Minister for Immigration, Local Government and Ethnic Affairs, upon notice, on 4 May 1989:

Does the Department have a 008 number which may be used by Gold Coast residents who wish to contact officers of the Department in Brisbane; if so, is this number listed in the Gold Coast telephone directory; if not, will the number be listed in future editions of the Gold Coast telephone directory and what is the number.

Senator Robert Ray —The answer to the honourable senator's question is as follows:

The Department does not have a 008 number through which Gold Coast residents may contact Departmental officers in Brisbane.

The Telephone Interpreter Service of the Department in Brisbane has a 008 number which has been operational since the end of April 1988. The number during office hours is (008) 11 2477; after hours it is (008) 25 1977. These numbers did not appear in the 1988 Gold Coast telephone directory but will in future be listed.
