Senator MACKLIN —I give notice that, on the next day of sitting, I shall move:

That the Senate-

(a) notes with concern that since January 1989 nearly 29,000 Australian children have become regular smokers, while another 83,000 have started experimenting with cigarettes;

(b) is alarmed that tobacco use and abuse caused approximately 17,000 deaths in Australia in 1988;

(c) applauds the decision of the World Health Organisation to declare 31 May 1989 a `world no-tobacco day'; and

(d) calls on the Government to adopt the recommendation of the Parliamentary Joint Committee on the National Crime Authority that the Commonwealth Government ban all advertising of tobacco products on radio, television, in cinemas and in print so far as it is within its constitutional power to do so'.
