Senator Walsh —On 8 May 1989 (Hansard p. 1959), Senator Newman asked the Minister representing the Minister for Employment, Education and Training:

Will the Minister representing the Minister for Employment, Education and Training advise the Senate when it may expect the Government's response to the report of the Senate Select Committee on the Education of Gifted and Talented Children, which was presented to the Senate on 18 May last year? Does the year's delay indicate the Government's commitment to making a major response to this important report, or is it simply an indication that the Government's rhetoric about the need to encourage a skilled work force is simply window-dressing without any concern for the plight of our most able children ploughing through the education system?

The Minister for Employment, Education and Training has provided the following answer to the honourable senator's question:

The Government's response to the Report of the Senate Select Committee on the Education of Gifted and Talented Children will be tabled in the next sitting period, commencing 23 May 1989.
