Senator JENKINS(8.03) —On behalf of the Australian Democrats I would also like to commend the Government on having brought forward its 82 amendments to the Migration Legislation Amendment Bill. The Democrats are supporting the Government's amendments. When we first saw the legislation we realised that it needed significant amendment if it was to be passed by the Parliament but we felt that it was not the Democrats' place to rewrite the whole legislation. Indeed, what we have now done is simply address issues where we believe the Government has not addressed issues and left it at that. As the Minister for Immigration, Local Government and Ethnic Affairs, Senator Ray, so courteously conceded, I have been in correspondence with him on some of these matters. The Democrats' amendments still have to come forward. I state categorically that if the Democrats' amendments are also accepted by the Senate, then we will indeed have very much improved immigration legislation.
